Sun July 25/15 Morning BJJ

Got to LEMMA around 9:30 am… no motivation but hey…

image

Yep… Stationary rowing… fantastic. Unfortunately no lifting. Didn’t want to risk weights with a really bad joint.

image

But 4 sets of 10 mins… every set beating the other… yes I was spent this morning.

Attendees included Katerina, Brittany, Jared, Scott, Gary, & Jesse… yes the king of Nogi… he came into learn some GI chokes. Fantastic!!

Warm-up was standard with jogging around the mat, lunges, forward/backwards rolling/shrimping and even butt scooting.

image

Drilling consisted of the x-pass, bull fighter-pass, knee slice-pass, turtle guard switches to even a harness back take and submission string follow up if you felt comfortable doing it… 2 min per person as fast as possible then switch. I drilled with Scotty which was nice because usually, there is an odd number of people.

Jesse came in at roughly 11:30 am… So he missed the warm-up and drilling. Oh well. Dude is getting technique in with a GI…

Heck he’s in a GI… BOOM
image

Technique review discussed the cross collar while inside the closed guard using the cross side lapel, as well as in side control, knee on belly, and even when fully mounted. We then reviewed the paper cutter choke from side control. Coach Matt was in and he showed a different variation of the paper cutter choke which required going to north south first which was cool and probably the first variation that was taught to me.

image

The guys spent 2 mins repping the technique each. I had them asked questions on how to make the submission theirs and how to make it work for them.

image

Had everyone roll 5 min rounds. I sat out due to my finger hyper extension. The beast sushi had to leave due to the kids fighting. The homies rolled about 3 rounds each. Lets just say I was really impressed by the way Jared rolled. He hasn’t been OTM for over a month… and wow. Great stuff!!

image

Definitely, I got sweaty from the rowing then drill session.

Back to the Buskers Festival for a mid day meal… I was determined to get some beef vindaloo lol.

Determined

Osss!!

July 22/15 BJJ

Yep if you haven’t heard from Facebook, July 22 was my date of birth… woopdidoo lol. I mean yes a birthday is always great to celebrate but on a Wednesday? really? wtf can you do nowadays. Especially if you are freaking 37 hahahah… yeah more booze then sleep after BJJ. hahahah oh well wash away my sorrows of getting younger.

BTW add me to Facebook if you haven’t…

Sooo blessed though with all the wishes for a very great day… kinda flabbergasted. If that’s even a word. thanks for all the lovely wishes… my day was made while spending it with the little guy and my wife got me ice cream cup cakes… my homie took me and G out for some Thai curry, not authentic btw lol and I got mauled by my partners at the gym… yes I had a few glasses of scotch with coke I might add… not the sipping kind hahahaha.

Showed up at the gym ummm around 6:00 pm, got to roll with Juneau.

Fun roll and it wasn’t to the death… at some moments I could feel his desire to kill me.

wpid-fb_img_1424066360026.jpg

Good Restraint homie, that’s what BJJ is about.

Then I rolled a few rounds with Diesel. Fun fun… kept me in defense mode. tried a few stupid things I should have but hey, experiment and go with it sometimes…. maybe not this time. Diesel is 200 lbs. He says he is 180 lbs. Don’t think so, maybe 190 lbs.

wpid-fb_img_1424066366162.jpg

I’m 160. 155 when I’m drained 165 lbs after a good meal. Dude has heavy hips. MMA guy… tonnes of wrestling experience. Love rolling with him. Used technique, but when he got frustrated, I could feel his strength… dude is experienced and is a beast. Oss.

Our head coach got me in for getting shark tanked… so class started at ummm 6:30 pm and ended at ummmm 7:30 pm.

After getting mangled by Diesel, Jayden was a nice light roll to keep my muscles warmed… The class continued with the review of technique while I kept rolling…
image

Felt kinda bad for my little buddy Jayden. He said that he came to class to learn something, instead of getting beat up.

Its either you win or you learn, no harm rolling with someone better then you… its all part of the development and you will get better.

I told Jayden, you need to focus on defense… he tried to wrist lock me lol.

wpid-image.jpg

Told him white belts are not allowed to wrist lock, but if you want to roll like that, then eh. I wrist locked him the rest of the rounds… not sure if he was tooo impressed. The thing with Jayden is that he is very technical. Give him a little space and he will take your back. Great kid and hopefully he is in for the long haul, remind me of me when I was younger.

Marco is a beast. He held out on a few chokes lol. At one point I counted 33 secs… damn son.

Believe me I ain’t no master but eh… blood to the brain is important hahahah.

wpid-fb_img_1427804219721.jpg

Scotty, as always a pleasure to roll with, his top game with pressure is coming along. Tough tough roll, especially with his leg lock arsenal, gotta keep those in mind.

sore meme

Travis damn son… what are you 190 lbs lol. Stronger, bigger, and flexible… built for BJJ OSSS!

Shoot I was tired, sore, and ready for some Johnny when I got home.

Rolling: (5 min rounds, 1 min breaks)

  1. Jayden
  2. Jayden
  3. Jayden
  4. Jayden
  5. Marco
  6. Marco
  7. Scotty
  8. Scotty
  9. Scotty
  10. Travis

Drained…. lol

July 19/15 Sun Morning BJJ

Got to class around 10:30 am… yes no lifting or conditioning lol… In-laws have been in since Friday. Had too much scotch last night lol.

wpid-fb_img_1425488219642.jpg

Larger then normal class for the summer with Nathan Hatton, Katrina Jones, Rupert Klein, Brittany McNeice, Justin St-Amand, Philippe Jecker, and big red Michael Hinsperger in attendance.

wpid-fb_img_1424065246623.jpg

Got the guys to drill some basic techniques for a warm up. 10 reps on each side. Arm bars from closed guard, hip bump sweeps, kimura from closed guard, hip bump to Marcelotines, triangles from closed guard, omaplata’s from closed guard, spider guard switches to Omaplata’s, for some I had them dive into triangles, and then they finished off with side control switches. A short clip of us below drilling…

Technique:
1. Cobra choke while in S-mount, starting in mount, switching to S-mount, gift wrap, then attack with the cobra choke.
2. Cobra choke set up from closed guard, to arm drag, then gift wrap, to flower sweep, attacking while in a S-mount like above.
3. X-collar from closed guard, palm-up and thumb in for the finish. My favourite BWT lol.

A short clip of us reviewing technique…

Saw this cobra choke on Facebook from a Blackbelt in Brazil for one of his instructions… Nathan mentioned that it was an old school choke. Pictures from my homie below… a catch wrestling technique.

image

Rolling: (5 min, 1 min breaks)
1. Philippe
2. Rupert
3. Brittany

Philippe is a 190 lbs blue belt, competes and he medals. Yep he puts me through the burners lol. Rupert was working real hard this morning to pass my guard… wpid-fb_img_1424066360026.jpgOver-time hard lol, great work homie. Brittany is methodical, working real hard, next up for her is understanding the progression and where to go in positioning. wpid-fb_img_1425777727935.jpgHer game has improved substantially ever since attending my classes and drilling more… she really needs to get graded. I will be sending something to her that has really helped me in BJJ, that I’ve read from Stephan Kesting. Worth a read if you have read it… BJJ Road Map

Thurs 9am July 16/15 BJJ

image

Got to LEMMA around 9am after feeding the monkey… yes, I brought him too in his little stroller lol. Britt was in with a bunch of her clients for her fitness training. Neat to see all her with her clientele in the gym. Rhino was in early with his kid to do some lifting.

image

Made sure to sweep and disinfect the mat… was hoping the little guy would fall asleep for his nap. I even brought his GI lol… waiting for him to fall asleep to put him on the mat. No dice during our light rolling sessions. Next time, I’m gonna just put him on the mat with his GI hah!!

Rolling: (7 min rounds, 1 min break)
1. Hash Man
2. Sushi
3. Hass Man
4. Winny

Rolling with Hash Man has always been fun… his Nogi base really helps him with his transitioning. Only when he wears No GI… lol today he didn’t where I did. Its always fun when when I roll with a handicap. Kid is fast, transitioning is clean, and his positioning has improved… love his game.

Rolling with Sushi hasn’t changed much. Always fighting to maintain top, going really hard… common white belt with a heavy set game. Probably a tad better as compared to the Albino Rhino when he first started, especially with the pressure. Sushi knows the pressure game, just has to stop emphasising using so much strength… oh well, only time OTM will help give those unnatural habits. Use strength and you will gas. Winny has the same strategy as Sushi.

image

Ironically, everyone new to BJJ seems to work a similar strategy, strength, and trying to pass my guard by running around as fast as possible to take my back hahahah.

Note my nicknames for everyone to protect their identities. Don’t get offended… it’s a blog. Like BJJ there is no sense in lying and making up nonsense, as it will all show up in the white wash… or OTM.

image

Keith was in with Owen waiting for Tony on a private… can’t wait till Graysone is older so i can roll with him.

image

See y’all Friday for Open Mat…

Wed July 15/15 Kids Class, then 6:30 pm BJJ

Got to the gym around 5:15 pm tonight… Coach needed a hand with the kids class, “no problem” I says… 3 monkeys showed up… by monkeys… they are monkeys.
image

Know it alls lol, hope my kid is easier to deal with… got them to do a warm up with the standard running around, rolling, shrimping, & even some break falls… then I got them to drill the closed guard kimura. They said they’d been taught, so I made them drill it and correcting their technique as they worked on the movements. Guess they don’t like drilling lol…
image

After that I asked then if they wanted to roll. They all looked at me funny and asked me what that was and I was like rolling?, sparring?, wrestling?, fighting by not hitting each other… then one smarty piped up and screamed take back/take back? I was like sure lol. Guess coach has been calling it take back/take back for a reason. Positional sparring lol… excellent. Had the guys roll with Windy who jumped in to help. I rolled with everyone as well. 5 min rounds. Hard to believe these kids are as tall as me hahaha.
image
For the 6:30 pm class Dave ran the class having us review a butterfly sweep variation as a warmup. Starting from the half guard, then setting up the hook of doom to the double under hooks while sitting up into butterfly guard. Love this.
image
Dave then got us to review a butterfly sweep when someone approaches you while you are in full butt down combat base. Kinda like in a half lotus position but your other knee is pointing up… image below.
image
Dave said to instead of grabbing the sleeve like above, to grab the elbow and pull it inward and at the same time kicking the hook leg up and to drop your head to the floor, then driving your knee inward into your opponents armpit maintaining the elbow or sleeve grip while you flatten him out into a reverse kesa gatame?… or something called like that lol… a common judo side control position. You then can attack the arm bar with the your upper leg from there.

Image below
image

Or this lol
image

Dave then had us review the nogi version with the collar tie in lieu of the belt grip or under hook. Next was if your opponent defends by posting that arm out while you grab the elbow. When they do this you re-cup the elbow, push your butterfly hooks outwards and sit up maintaining the cupped elbow with their hand on the side of your neck thumb down to attack an inverted arm bar. Love this… image of something like below but sitting up only to add more pressure to the elbow.
image
Dave then then discussed the fact that when your opponent adjust to escape you can re kick out your hooks to reset and attack the other arm with the same technique. Note that there are numerous and other attacks from here… the ones Dave had us review are a string of attacks to help the chain of submission move forward in your arsenal, like any other attacks we. Would have worked on from there. There is never just one or two attacks.
image
Remember… practice, practice, drill, drill, & drill…

Tues July 14/15 Lifting, Picnic, then Nogi

Met up with Travis and hit up the Complex early in the morning. Love the fact they have a day care…

Lifts:
1. Squats, 135 lbs, 5 sets, 18 reps
2. Bench, 135 lbs, 4 sets, 18 reps
3. Crunches, 4 sets, 18 reps

Went to the local Teddy Bear Picnic at a local park with G, met up with another  other couple with a kid his age or close lol… by 3 months hahahah cute.

image

Wifey got home in time for me to get ready for 5:30 pm , nogi… yes nogi…

image

Yes gotta train nogi.. partnered with Jesse Vetri… yes he came to a class lol… crazy… pigs are flying. Dude trains jitz twice a day. Second actual class I’ve seen him attend this year, he’s probably attended other lol. My one Sunday class, then this lol… he is getting ready for Masters Worlds… one day I’ll make it. More, mat time is important, especially to work on and refine technique.

image

Matthew Thorburn reviewed a string of closed guard attacks set up from an arm drag, with a lat grip. Love these wooo.

image

Emma then joined to work on these techniques. Emma is a freak wrestler who is slowly adjusting to playing off her back… slowly.

image

She has been away for over a year working on her wrestling and competitions with the University she attends locally here. FANTASTIC!!

Rolling:
1. Emma Horner
2. Morgo Razer Frazer
3. Colin the 220 lbs white belt with an Aikido back ground

Fun rounds… Emma with her deadly head snaps downs to gilliotine… she fights tooth and nail for the takedown… must be a wrestling thing lol…

image

I ended up pulling guard, she wasn’t happy lol. Then I transitioned to a single leg. Oops hahah.

image

Morgo was just flowing which was nice… dude busted his foot again. Rest up homie. Seriously lol.

image

Hahahah

Rolling with Colin was a tough as usual. Dude is always rolling hard lol.
Oh well… especially with a big guy who is basically just figuring out how to use a fantastic base. Especially when he fights tooth and nail for the top game…

image

Yes smaller purple belts have problems with bigger guys especially when there is a 60 lbs to 70 lbs weight difference and that they have been training for a while…

image

Weight does make a difference when skill catches up…

image

Oh well, I always end up focusing on my sweep and closed guard game with him… he will learn.

Hopefully we see you out tomorrow!

Fri July 3/15 Open Mat

Got to LEMMA round 4pm…

Damn I was tired…

Didn’t even want to train.

image

Stationary Rowing, 4 sets of 10 mins.

image

At least what I did was better then staying home and watching TV lol.

Still came in to get time OTM.

Matt Veal was in shadow boxing and stuff for a bit.

Was actually hoping no one would show up to Roll…

WRONG!…..

Big Red came in… then Jesse Veltri, Shat Prof Nathan, Marco, then Rupert lol… damn.

Gotta roll…

Nothing like having others help push you.

Rolling: (10 min rounds, 1 min breaks)
1. Big Red
2. Jesse
3. Jesse
4. Nathan

DAMN Big Red is getting bigger… starting to use his weight better. Jesse is all about pushing the pace, fantastic pressure as usual. Nathan is all about his top game and is slowly developing his bottom game lately. Love this. Love the group of guys we have. Diverse set of skill sets. Different concepts to bring to the table, with different styles, & games.

Keep evolving, keep growing. My game is only as good as how much my homies push me. Even though I didn’t even want to show up!
