Homies be like what what…

image

My knee is snore, not sure why. Before the rolling too. I suspect I banged it up while sleep rolling onto the floor or into the wall.

image

The wife will have to clarify…

Either that or its the aftermath of rolling with those human apes on Wednesday lol…

image

Crazy… sleep, eat, work for BJJ, word!

I took it really easy today…

It was all focus with no messing around…

Didn’t want to mess up the knee even further…

Gotta be able to attend the weddings…

YES, 2 IN A ROW…

SON!

Flew to London Saturday morning…

Flying back to Thunder Bay Sunday morning, then driving to Minneapolis.

NUTS nuts nuts!

image

Warmup:

Alex the bear… a lot of flow. Man I remember a time where all he was, was dah judo… gripping judo. Hummm bear? Judo? Yep. Crushing strength.

Your flow has come a long way my friend… keep it up.

Osss!!

Now only if I can convince you to compete with us.

Rolling: (5 min, 2 breaks)
1. Luka
2. Luka
3. Luka
4. Luka

Been playing around with a modified baseball strangle lately from side control with stapling the arm to immobilize my opponent lately. Something like what John Veal use to do to me while up here, but working into a paper cutter. This works with bigger stronger guys, as most will just try bench pressing you as most of the pressure is applied to the neck carotid artery. Its effectiveness is so far phenomenal. I attack the other arm with my free hand to bait the opening. If they don’t take it, I can maintain side control, move to north south, attack dangling are, or status quo for the strangle.

image

Brother you gotta tap! Snore snore…. out.

image

Technique:

With dah Frenchman… he wanted to review escaping the northsouth. Definitely a few variations, mainly to me off scrambles and timing. Soo hard to escape once your opponent clamps down like a vise.

All and all, great session homies!!

I will be in London, then Minneapolis till Tuesday.

My boy Nathan the Prof Shat Hatton has me covered.

Positional Drills: (50% & 75% resistance)

Everyone had an opportunity to work this with everyone, and then they alternated between being in the closed guard, defending, or attacking with only cross collars.

We then discussed a few defenses to the collar choke… a nice video below by Stephan Kesting discussing other potential defenses…

Got to LEMMA around 5:30 pm… homies were OTM!!

wpid-fb_img_1427804219721.jpg

Josh, Big Red, Big Rig, Alex the bear, Morgo, and the Frenchman… I was the odd man out… blah.

First roll was with Morgo..o oops sorry bro, accidental knee to the chin, cut his tongue.

BLOOD I see blood… tuck the head in bro when you work that pressure pass…

WEAR A MOUTH GHU-WHARD… lol

What a trooper, sorry brother… great technical roll though. Man I remember our first roll, freck we trained sooo much since… your game has improved leaps and bounds. Your flexibility was your strength, however it was your weakness, now you are working your top game… before the random scattered unfocused, thoughtless and insecure moves… to now, being a force to be reckoned with. I do remember you almost quitting BJJ. Great job homie. I remember our first tournament together, ever since that, there has been no looking back. Heck, for the both of us us!! future Black Belts!

Switched to Scotty too hotty, mid roll to let him heal lol...

Big Red, holy-moly… the explosion buddy… just have to be less telegraphing… maybe a relaxed approach with all of your strength and raw power. Building sensitivity and rolling to conserve energy for your next match may be something to think about, especially being conscientious of preparing for a tournament, with having maybe a round to recuperate, unless there is only one other guy in your division… not every roll is too the death. Nice though, once in a while, I like it, a life or death situation…lol I love rolling with you buddy, keep it up! tough rolls help me keep my head in the game. Sorry bout the pant leg. You should have let me pass… my torreando is immaculate at times hahaha.

Saulo Ribeiro

Scotty too hotty… I see the frustration when I take your back. Your back control defense has improved a lot, well done sir. Keep on trucking!!

wpid-img_143809769913866.jpeg

Josh Deluca what can I say, when I get you on your back, that’s the only way I can, one up you… sooo frecken strong… I strong like bull…osss

Man, my knee is bruised and my shin is still bruised DAFACK!!!

Rolling: (7 min, 1 min break)

  1. Morgo, partial
  2. Scotty tooo hotty, partial

Class Warm-up: (Arm-bar Drilling, 2 mins each)

  1. Standard Arm-bar, from closed guard
  2. Fat Man arm-bar, from closed guard

Lost in arm-bars… in fact 4 variations, mainly fat man ones, at least that what i call them, with different entries, grips, and options in attacking the the opposite arm for the omaplata and even just sweeping. Then we rolled with 3 min rounds. I find the 3 min rounds are the bruisers… everyone seems to go sooo freaking hard crazy crazy…

Rolling: (3 min rounds, 30 sec break)

  1. Diesel
  2. Travis Duncan
  3. Brittany
  4. Michael Maronese

Someone had the most stanky ass GI… thought it was me.

Work keeping you busy?

Let just say I had a few tough rolls ahem 5 rounds?

5 min burners with a very athletic fellow who has been off the mat for over a month.

HE WAS HUNGRY Hah!

Oh boy duder is still as strong. Oh Justin St Amand… you do know I’m talking about you. Your drive is what makes you excel above others. Keep at it brother. You are a force to be reckoned with.

image

Morgan was in, even with his broken toe… noticed Nathan leaving while pulling in. Scotty too hotty was just on his way out. Morgan was helping Katrina with various issues. Yep I got the beast of a white belt waiting to gobble me up. lol

Morgan ran a short warm-up with a positional drilling exercise.

Coach got us to drill on a few self-defense back take defense variations. I Partnered with Justin the beast Sillyman. First from the head lock when your attacker misses the head strike. Then second from a body lock from behind.

Below is a good clip of what was reviewed yesterday for a head lock escape…

Stephan Kesting does it best with his video below…

Coach then got us to drill a closed guard, with double belt grip break, to an over hook, then London guard with a collar grip, then omaplata, with even strikes.

wpid-fb_img_1425488219642.jpg

Great class for those of you that didn’t show…

BJJ Wed May 20/15

Got to the gym around 6:25 pm… Brown Belt Mikey ran the warm up…

wpid-fb_img_1424065246623.jpg

Coach got us to drill a self-defense mount escape variation while your attacker grabs both wrist above your head. In this scenario the path to least resistance is side to side. Move your elbows to you hips one way, then switch to moving to the other side. keeping the momentum while moving to to the other side turning your attackers hand outward with a circular windshield hand washer movement to break the grip and execute a tight arm drag. With the free hand, hold your attacker down maintaining the trapped arm, only to bridge at the same moment towards the trapped arm “similar to and arm drag butterfly sweep”, along with blocking the same side leg.

I partnered with Brown Belt Mikey to drill the escape like 30 times lol…

Yay mount escapes…

Sooo many variations and scenarios. you can never be to ready no?

Below is a nice clip by Roy Dean with multiple mount escapes, with similar concepts by trapping or blocking the leg as well as trapping or blocking the arm on the same side preventing your attacker from basing out or posting. Posting or basing out will prevent you from bridging or turning over, so you need to take that away from your attacker… Roy Dean actually reviews escapes to re-guarding as well which is also very nice for other worst case and applicable scenarios…

Coach then got us to drill a take down which involves a same side lapel grip by pulling your opponent towards you, with an inside same leg sweep, to a ankle pick on the far heel while punching through with maintaining momentum and lapel grip to include a leg drag pass.

Below is a clip a ankle pick put together by Jiu jitsu Mag, by Luis “Limao” Heredia with a variation from an under hook scenario including the inside leg sweep…

Below is the same setup, with a double pull down lapel grip, this time with no inside sweep and attacking the same side leg…

“Food for thought… does ankle picking have to start from standing?”

Below is a clip from Jason Scully discussing it from the seated position…

“Coach then reviewed a few of my favorite chokes from Guard. Cross collar, both palms up. The cross collar with palm up, palm down, to counter the arm block defense by turning an angle. Then a same side lapel grip to cross collar, top grip thumb in… all was fantastic love working these. Lets be honest there are so many variation to this submission. Keys being, to use your wrist as a fulcrum, your legs, hips to break your opponents posture, keep them down and controlled . If your wrist hurt while doing this, your doing it wrong. This submission is gentle, applied to cut off blood flow to the brain by restricting flow in the carotid artery in the sides of the neck. It should be a non compliant choke.”

These are my favorite submissions BTW…

wpid-fb_img_1424066315551.jpg

Coach then got us to roll, 5 min rounds… I sat out the first round. then rolled with Ugo, who is a 240 pound 6ft 5in White Belt with a Yellow Belt in Judo…

wpid-fb_img_1428547599838.jpg

“hahahah, thought my head was gonna pop off at one point.”

Ugo

Left to right: Tony, Ugo, me, then Marc… my boy Travis is on the cam.

Yes furious he was lol.

“Thanks Morgan!”

furious ewok

Then I rolled with Marc.

“I’ll tell you after working from 6 am to 6 pm for a long day in the office, with 2 hours of driving… its nothing like have a good solid hard roll to put things behind you and forget about what happened through out the day.”

Food for thought… defending chokes?

Below is a nice clip from Stephan Kesting on a few cross collar counters…

Love collar chokes…
