Clip of Drills from Sunday… Took 15 to 20 mins with the breaks

I’ve been letting the videos run longer especially when I get a chance to work in some drills, accidentally of course… the my phone editor won’t handle 15 to 20 min… so I had to find something to get it to work… its sped up by 6… or 7… maybe even 9. The viddy is below.

Hope to see a few of you out tomorrow… was a little ill today… baby was up a few times last night. Didn’t even go to work.

Dafack, Sunday Day Light Savings? this Sunday!

Thank god I moved my clocks ahead last night… with the day light savings time modification,  we lost an hour to our day lol… at 8:00 am the dog didn’t per usual lick me in the face to get up lol… I had to pick him up myself to encourage him to go out, get fed, and watch me have my coffee… hilarious…

image

Got to the gym at roughly 8:45 am and I was most definitely not motivated to do anything. I popped a few ibuprofen & man was I ever sore from the past few days…   No repping movements or anything on the grappling dummy… so i thought eh… if I’m not motivated… lets change it up and do some stretching and other exercises… till someone pops through the doors… sure enough daylight savings time change lol some of the guys were late… expected I guess… if no one showed up I would have got into the weights…

I really tried, I really did… just not motivated…

Sweeping bro…mad sweeps..

Got some stretching in, 2 sets of 25 push ups, 2 sets of 50 crunches…

Had to get more in… 2 sets of 25 push ups, 2 sets of 50 crunches…

Lifting soon!!

Sure enough Philippe, Mike, Nathan, then finally Travis arrived…

Warm Up: Took 15 mins
1. Pummeling, 2.0 mins, alternating
2. Modified single leg takedown, 2.0 mins, alternating
3. Drop Seoi Nage, 2.0 mins, alternating
4. Modified hip throw with submission, 2.0 mins, alternating
5. Duck unders to sacrifice takedown, then taking the back, 2.0 mins, alternating

I’ve been letting the videos run longer especially when I get a chance to work in some drills, accidentally of course… the my phone editor won’t handle 15 to 20 min… booo… will have to find a video editor to do such a thing… soon… very soon!

Technique: Sweeps

lol… I asked everyone if they had any issues, something we could trouble shoot or any techniques or stuff they wanted to work on… sure enough the guys wanted to review or asked for some open guard sweeps. The ones we worked on this morning are as follows:

1. Weighter Sweep @ roughly 1:15

2. Tripod Sweep @ roughly 1:12

4. Star Sweep @ roughly 1:22

5. Tomahawk/Hammer/Sickle Sweep at roughly 1:28

Mike, I’ve attached a video from YouTube by Jason Skully for reference with 51 other sweeps we will take a run through…  also an awesome breakdown from Emily Kwok… her BJJ is the bomb, she doesn’t switch the foot placement to the hips… so I guess it doesn’t really matter… or does it, pending on the angle of approach by your opponent? guess only mat time will help iron out the kinks…  enjoy!!

Jason Skully with 51 Sweeps

Emily Kwok Tomahawk/Hammer/Sckle Sweep from BJJ Weekly

I’m hoping Leo Oja’s self defense class for mothers and daughter went alright… had to cut the class earlier.

Hope to see everyone out… Mon, Tues, Wed, Fri or Sat… maybe even Sun…

Watch “Sat BJJ” on YouTube

Brown Belt Mike ran the show today at 2:00pm… reviewed the de la riva with some sweeps as well as passing this guard

Rolling consisted of 3 minute rounds…

Below is a short clip up us rolling…

Maybe we’ll see you out tommorrow morning at 10:00 am…

Ossu!

Finally Friday, Open Mat Baby!!!!!

Finally Friday Open Mat

Had some scotch, “Glenfiddich 15 year aged in Oak barrels” and some beer “Shock Top” tall boys… and oh homemade Pho… bomb di-shizzel…

Got to LEMMA at roughly 4:00 pm with my boy Nathan… awesome!! I should have popped some ibuprofen before BJJ, but whatever, lower back still feels shot and awkward, but it’s been since Tuesday for any BJJ… did some stretching in between rolling sessions… I definitely had some harder rolling sessions today… lower back and drinking excessive water… yep knee bellies didn’t help… oh well lol.

Most definitely got some solid rolling in tonight… we got warriors here… all are welcome when in Northern Ontario while visiting to train… TRUTH.

Rolling:

  1. Nathan Hatton, warm up round, starting with pummeling to get the old man shoulders worked up… yep not warmed up yet lol. 10 min round. Viddy is below.

  1. Marc Perrier, though it was gonna be a warm out round… turned into a rougher than expected round… my contacts almost fell out that’s how rough it got… I was gassed… chugged tonnes of water. I sure felt it in my later rolling sessions…. 2 x 10 min rounds in a row. Viddy is below.

  1. Scott Paradis, always fun and harder rounds with him on top of me. 10 min round. Viddy is below.

  1. Devon. Newer guy with wrestling, and some Nogi skills, tough round, dude is really athletic, similar to Marc… progression may be faster than others, but need to still focus on the basics. Gogo-plata is cool… defending my GI chokes is more important. Viddy is below. 10 min round. Viddy is below.

  1. Matt Veal. Got caught with a Gerbi Choke (Peruvian Kneck tie with a GI) and a 10 finger Guillotine. I always get intertwined in using strength with him… no dice. I’m smaller, not as strong and definitely not as quick or athletic… must improve my techniques and execution… chugging water and not taking ibuprofen did not help. 10 min round. Viddy is below.

A nice reference I found online from Youtube to the Gerby Choke I got caught with is below from BJJ Joe.

  1. Nathan Hatton, the last round, with an unintended harder round, before I signed out for the night. Got caught with in a reverse kimura from turtle, not surprised his top game and side control game is elite, especially with his wrestling core. Accidentally knee him in the head ouchy, while passing his guard… sorry big guy. Had to defend this kimura attempt again, went back to turtle and made some adjustments… close to getting the bow, but the buzzer rang… 10 min round. Viddy is below.

Left LEMMA at roughly 6:15 pm to go home and finalize the meal for tonight!! Yes… love me ma PHO…

wpid-img_143809769913866.jpeg

Hard to imagine how hard you train… or how much time we spend OTM… especially when you work full time have kids and other priorities…until you actually start documenting it… video documenting your game will help immensely.

Can’t wait, Kathy is making a chocolate cheese cake with these crème  sugar eggs things on top of them for me… fatty and high in calories she says, for Sunday… got to live lol, my competition training will commence after this Sunday.

See you for Sat 2pm or Sun 10 am BJJ!!

Ossu!!

Break from BJJ

Taking a break till Friday… lets take a break… a Bit Bat Bacon Break…

Nom num… didn’t realize with all this drama that I’ve trained BJJ 5 days in a row… Dafack… 5 days in a row…

Decided to take a break tonight and conjure up a new school, bacon, egg,  grilled cheese with mozzarella/fresh basil, & kettle corn chips for a dinner meal… yes yes of saturated fat… tonnes of fat…  love it… love it. BTW bacon fat don’t count lol.

I definitely forgot I should only be training on Suns, Tues, Fris, and Sats.  Rocked out Fri,  Sat,  Sun,  Mon, & Tues in lieu lol… definitely been distracted and a little perturbed since last week when I heard about a buddy of mine who would have had to relinquish his belt while visiting another BJJ club if he wanted to train… the Owner/Instructor stated that this was a specified policy of his organization that had a different belt system in BJJ that would make you start over as a BJJ white belt, don’t want to name names but…

McDojo anyone, I’ve trained at a few clubs in my lifetime, never lol… blood sweat and tears to be awarded that belt… to be asked to go back to a white belt??? BS… i can understand if it was Karate, Kung Fu, or even Judo,  but really BJJ lol…

Anywho, that being said, that organization who he claimed, he was part of got wift of this issue… contacted this gentleman and got him to remove a few things from his website claiming he was a student…. BOOOM… Verified. The ever changing website… I should have initially taken a screen shot.

Small win for the little guy,  I smell fraudulent activities, hopefully nothing else and hopefully his current students figure things out. Would hate for his students to learn about his washed down BJJ he has been teaching. Guess anyone can learn from YouTube right?

I ain’t no pit bull… the case above and below is relative. Those knowing what I’m talking about will giggle. Have an awesome night…

Hopefully, we see yall out for Friday 5 pm Open Mat!!

Sunday Funday, 10 am BJJ

image

Got a text from Professor Nathan Hatton at roughly 8:00 am… sure enough he’s back from his layaway since his wrestling coaching has ended…to Sunday early training awesomeness… “Free time baby, means more training woooo” he says… Nathan came in early as well to get some lifting in awesome.

Got some news about a training partner who moved down south about their promotions with Gringo BJJ… Ashley getting her purple and Johnny getting striped up fan-freaking-tastic, always great to those committed and train soo much progress. Crongrats guys. Miss these peoples. You train in the GI… it’s easy. You will get promoted in the GI… Ossu!!

9:00 am training consisted of tabata styled movements with the grappling dummy. 60 secs per movement, with 5, different exercises as hard and as fast as possible. 5 sets total 60 sec breaks between sets. Yep the same… next month will be something else… just have to figure that out. Most definitely will keep the push ups to knee belly.

5 Sets of:
1. 60 sec, knee belly switches
2. 60 sec, side control switches
3. 60 sec, mount to s-mount, alternating sides
4. 60 sec, standing up side control switches

Below is sped up clip x 7 of the class warm we did this morning enjoy…

String Drilling:

  2. Passing, toreando to back take and submission, 1 min each
  3. Sit outs from arm in head lock, 1 min each
  4. Modified single leg takedown (chest pressure & heal pick, from cross-lapel double fist grip break, switch to maintain a wrist grip placing between partners leg), once down leg drag to leg drag mount, then side control to s-mount, bait the cross collar choke then partner defends, pop the elbow through to hook the arm, switch the arm and hook the leg with the far arm to execute an arm bar while your partner is still on his side. 1 min each
  5. Knee slide pass through partners butterfly, to knee belly, work for arm bar, baseball bat strangle, or paper cutter. 1 min each
  6. Modified Judo hip throw, retaining the far side arm hook with a deep under hook, set up a north south head mount kimura/wrist lock to a spinning arm bar/wrist lock. 1 min each
  7. Lapel, arm sleeve control guard pull, leg on hip to arm bar. 1 min each

Below is sped up clip x 7 of the drilling we did this morning enjoy…

I asked everyone if anyone had something they wanted to work on… Nathan brought up the baseball bat strangle… I said perfect. We then noted the difference between a choke and a strangle… as to some may use choke interchangeably between the two. Choking is by attacking the wind pipe, its painful and your opponent may comply with a scramble to escape et-cetera. Strangle is by attacking your opponents carotid artery on the side of their neck to restrict blood flow to the brain and putting him to sleep, non compliant.

Technique: (Baseball Bat Strangles)

  1. Baseball bat strangle, with a knee slide from side control to finish in north south and head placement on the opposite side.
  2. Baseball bat strangle, starting from inside your closed guard, baiting the pass or forcing the pass with a sweeping hook, to finishing on your belly.
  3. Baseball bat strangle, using your opponents lapel, with a knee slide from side control to finish in north south and head placement on the opposite side.
  4. Baseball bat strangle, starting from inside your closed guard, using your opponents lapel, baiting the pass or forcing the pass with a sweeping hook, to finishing on your belly.

I even showed a reversal from top side if your opponent defends the knee slide…

 Rolling: (4 x 5 mins Rounds)

  1. Sat out, had no one to roll with
  2. Rupert Klein, 1 x 5 min, hard round
  3. Nathan Hatton, 2 x 5 min hard round

Stretching: (10 mins)

Had Nathan Hatton run the stretching… popped a few ibuprofens… yep… stretching lol… short clip below lol… we even swept the mat after… respect the mat!!

Nathan… Below is the guy is a clip I found on Youtube about the guy I was talking about today… with the baseball bat strangle… enjoy

Hope I see everyone sometime this week… rumor has it there may be promotions…

Ossu.
