Rhino ran the class tonight and went through collar tie counter with a 2 on 1 with pressure on the arm/shoulder and elbow into a take down.

Below is the closest video I could find similar on YouTube for further reference. Its also called a Russian tie up apparently.

Rolling (3 min Rounds)

Never been a fan of short rounds, as people tend to give you all they got… and gas out…

1. Trina with focus was on close guard.

2. Young new white belt guy with focus was on back take… this guy had blood in his eyes… good thing I didn’t give him any space… he wanted to smash me lol. New spazzy white belts… respect, you gotta start somewhere.. and heck he has his own GI, respect.

3. Juneau with focus was on back take.

4. Rhino with focus on defending his chokes.

5. Another young new white belt guy with focus on maintaining mount.

6. The French Man, Philippe, working my top game.

Sunday Funday, 10 am BJJ

image

Got a text from Professor Nathan Hatton at roughly 8:00 am… sure enough he’s back from his layaway since his wrestling coaching has ended…to Sunday early training awesomeness… “Free time baby, means more training woooo” he says… Nathan came in early as well to get some lifting in awesome.

Got some news about a training partner who moved down south about their promotions with Gringo BJJ… Ashley getting her purple and Johnny getting striped up fan-freaking-tastic, always great to those committed and train soo much progress. Crongrats guys. Miss these peoples. You train in the GI… it’s easy. You will get promoted in the GI… Ossu!!

9:00 am training consisted of tabata styled movements with the grappling dummy. 60 secs per movement, with 5, different exercises as hard and as fast as possible. 5 sets total 60 sec breaks between sets. Yep the same… next month will be something else… just have to figure that out. Most definitely will keep the push ups to knee belly.

5 Sets of:
1. 60 sec, knee belly switches
2. 60 sec, side control switches
3. 60 sec, mount to s-mount, alternating sides
4. 60 sec, standing up side control switches
5. 60 sec, side control, push-ups to knee belly, alternating knees

Below is a 1-2 min sped up video clip x 4, of me drilling with the grappling dummy at 9 am this morning enjoy!

15 min Warm-up:
1. forward shoulder rolls, alternating shoulders, 2 x across mat
2. Reverse shoulder rolls, alternating shoulders, 2 x across mat
3. Side shoulder rolls, 1 x across mat left side & 1 x across mat right side
4. Forward butt scoots, 2 x across mat
5. Reverse butt scoots, 2 x across mat
6. Backwards shrimping, 2 x across mat
8. Forward shrimping, 2 x across mat
9. Backwards break fall to technical stand, 2 x across mat
10. Forward break falls to technical stand, 2 x across mat
11. Outside Z walks, 1 x across mat forward
12. Single knee drops, 2 x across mat

Below is sped up clip x 7 of the class warm we did this morning enjoy…

String Drilling:

  1. Passing, x-passing to back take and submission, 1 min each
  2. Passing, toreando to back take and submission, 1 min each
  3. Sit outs from arm in head lock, 1 min each
  4. Modified single leg takedown (chest pressure & heal pick, from cross-lapel double fist grip break, switch to maintain a wrist grip placing between partners leg), once down leg drag to leg drag mount, then side control to s-mount, bait the cross collar choke then partner defends, pop the elbow through to hook the arm, switch the arm and hook the leg with the far arm to execute an arm bar while your partner is still on his side. 1 min each
  5. Knee slide pass through partners butterfly, to knee belly, work for arm bar, baseball bat strangle, or paper cutter. 1 min each
  6. Modified Judo hip throw, retaining the far side arm hook with a deep under hook, set up a north south head mount kimura/wrist lock to a spinning arm bar/wrist lock. 1 min each
  7. Lapel, arm sleeve control guard pull, leg on hip to arm bar. 1 min each

Below is sped up clip x 7 of the drilling we did this morning enjoy…

I asked everyone if anyone had something they wanted to work on… Nathan brought up the baseball bat strangle… I said perfect. We then noted the difference between a choke and a strangle… as to some may use choke interchangeably between the two. Choking is by attacking the wind pipe, its painful and your opponent may comply with a scramble to escape et-cetera. Strangle is by attacking your opponents carotid artery on the side of their neck to restrict blood flow to the brain and putting him to sleep, non compliant.

Technique: (Baseball Bat Strangles)

  1. Baseball bat strangle, with a knee slide from side control to finish in north south and head placement on the opposite side.
  2. Baseball bat strangle, starting from inside your closed guard, baiting the pass or forcing the pass with a sweeping hook, to finishing on your belly.
  3. Baseball bat strangle, using your opponents lapel, with a knee slide from side control to finish in north south and head placement on the opposite side.
  4. Baseball bat strangle, starting from inside your closed guard, using your opponents lapel, baiting the pass or forcing the pass with a sweeping hook, to finishing on your belly.

I even showed a reversal from top side if your opponent defends the knee slide…

 Rolling: (4 x 5 mins Rounds)

  1. Sat out, had no one to roll with
  2. Rupert Klein, 1 x 5 min, hard round
  3. Nathan Hatton, 2 x 5 min hard round

Stretching: (10 mins)

Had Nathan Hatton run the stretching… popped a few ibuprofens… yep… stretching lol… short clip below lol… we even swept the mat after… respect the mat!!

Nathan… Below is the guy is a clip I found on Youtube about the guy I was talking about today… with the baseball bat strangle… enjoy

Hope I see everyone sometime this week… rumor has it there may be promotions…

Self Defense and Sport BJJ

Sport Jiu-Jitsu in a Street Fight! (Gracie Breakdown)

#Bjjfourlife's avatarBJJFourLife... #BJJ4LIFE

Ironically there still is controversy on how people view sport BJJ not being a realistic part of BJJ as a whole… Sport BJJ obviously is a small facet of what BJJ has to offer… pulling berimbolo or 50/50 obviously isn’t the greatest choice initially as a defense during initial confrontation or while trying to neutralize the situation and disengaging obviously.

Below is a nice discussion between Budo Jake with Rafa and Gui Mendes to talking about their school with BJJ and their take on teaching sport BJJ and self defense BJJ.

Interesting analysis regarding a recent incident on a basketball court who a buddy of mine knows that trains at Alliance Jiu-Jitsu in Minneapolis.

Below is a rant by a Gracie Black Belt… its a free country and everyone is allowed to have an opinion…  personally I thought this was a little disrespectful and a little out of place… but who am I, just a lowly…

Friday Night Open Mat at LEMMA

Best of luck this weekend Jesse Veltri.. for those who know him he’s been training with us at LEMMA for a while now… he’s headed to Gracie Nationals Submission only event.  Wish i could attend. Priorities first i guess…

Wooo fantastic night for all that attended! Lots of peeps OTM.

Got a few tough and fun rolls in tonight… truth.
Rounds in are as follows:

2-10 min flow warm up rounds with Marc Perrier

1-10 min hard flow round with Marc Perrier

1-10 min hard flow round with Morgan Frazer to warm him up

1-10 min hard round with Marc Perrier

1-10 min hard round with Travis Duncan

1.5-10 min hard round with visiting blue belt Brian Walker from Trenton

1-10 min hard round with Matt Veal

1.5-10 min hard round to finish off the night with Lukasz Jan

Wooo, what some sleep and a great warm can do, a great night indeed… we need to have a Warriors class,  similar to what Cobra Kai has in Vegas. A class with just tough competitive long rolling rounds.

I was pondering at 7:30 pm whether I should change or keep rolling… I opted to change and go home… dinner with the wife and bonding with the baby time. Oh and some scotch… to help with the recovery for tomorrow.

Self Defense and Sport BJJ

Ironically there still is controversy on how people view sport BJJ not being a realistic part of BJJ as a whole… Sport BJJ obviously is a small facet of what BJJ has to offer… pulling berimbolo or 50/50 obviously isn’t the greatest choice initially as a defense during initial confrontation or while trying to neutralize the situation and disengaging obviously.

Below is a rant by a Gracie Black Belt… its a free country and everyone is allowed to have an opinion…  personally I thought this was a little disrespectful and a little out of place… but who am I, just a lowly Purple Belt lol.

That being said what if you didn’t have a choice? what if you got jumped… a beer bottle crack over on the side of the head, your laying on the ground, your slightly conscious, your attacker is about to make a final blow? wouldn’t being familiar with these positions definitely help increase your probability to survive, guessing its not completely useful given the synario or context?? lol. That being said…

Food for thought below is a video of BJJ in the streets lol… not condoning it, violence and fighting is bad, but it does happen… knowing something is better then nothing?

Open mat Wed BJJ

Wow… keep telling myself I will only be training Sundays, Tuesdays, Fridays, & Saturdays…
Turns out in BJJ there are laws of equilibrium when opportunities seeks itself, when allowed your training regiment naturally just balances itself out… turns out I’ve been training Sundays,  Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, & Saturdays. I Always seemed to get convinced by someone… ahem ‘Morgan Frazer’ to drop in for extra training, oddly enough, I easily say yes. Priorities right? I won’t be able to train this much once my child has extra curricular activities around maybe 4 or 5?? Hey… I bond with him every night… even read to him at night about BJJ techniques lol… Oh… and the Berenstain Bears one chapter so far.

Only attended the Open mat tonight… but got there around 4pm. Rolled with Brock for 2-6 min flow roll rounds,  rolled with Morgan for 2-6 min rounds, warmed up big Alex for a 6 min round, then rolled with Morgan with what seemed to be like 3-6 min rounds… then some rolling with Trina to finish off the night before heading home to the wife and baby.
Brock is one tough cookie and strong as an bull, his positioning is spot on, and his flow has improved immensely. If he wanted I know for a fact he can toss me… taken it easy on the old guy lol.
Alex, on the other hand, is like rolling with a full grown cub.  Ridiculously strong and rightfully uses when he chooses. Has its pros and cons though especially when up against someone stronger and only relying on it. Definitely has improved defensively. Flow Rolling has improved as well since the very first time we rolled. Like a brick to flowing like a brick with rounded edges hahaha.
Morgan Frazer is always a pleasure given that we don’t give too much of weight advantageously,  or dis-advantageously minus the spazz, randomized movements you get out of him when he fights his way out of something.  Kinda like rolling with a beginner. Which in a way strategically could be beneficial… poking your opponent in the eyes while scrambling hahahah. Spent most of my time working defensive positions… working out of chokes, lapel strangles and bad positions using secret techniques.  Even drilled some Dele Riva Leg Weave and leg dragging passes to knee on belly…
Finished off the night rolling with Trina. Her passing and positional movements are improving respectfully.  Still leads with open posture while passing leaving room for defensive attacks on my end. Sometimes telegraphing attacks and movements.  Only drilling and time on the mat to develop sensitivity to avoid specific movements I guess. Not gonna lie I still do white belt transitions while rolling with more advanced grapplers.
Ugh see the bags under my eyes below from the wonderful photos taken by my buddy Travis Duncan last night.

Ossss
