Sun Morn Jiu Jitz
Got to the gym at roughly 9:00 am, got some lifting, a short vanity workout and some rowing in boom, trying to get ready for this competition!
Lifting: (9:05 am to 9:40 pm, 4 sets, 12 reps )
- Squats, 135 lbs
- Bench Press, 135 lbs
Then some crunches to work on my vainness, 4 sets of 100 Reps
Conditioning: (Stationary Rowing, Level 6)
- 1000 m, 4:30 min
- 1000 m, 4:45 min
- 1000 m, 5:00 min
Kind of not impressed with the increase in time, but hey… I moved it up to level 6 lol… next is level 7.
Again beautiful day out, 16c to 18c , sunny… great forecast of the size of our class with Myself, The Frenchman, Big Red, new white belt Travis and Professor Shat. The Frenchman had to take off earlier due to other commitments.
Got a quick clip of one of our standard warm up we do below from Sunday…
Quick clips of us working some takedown drills from this morning…
3:00 mins each, alternate once you reach the end of the mat…
2 mins each, alternating…
Technique: (10 mins on each)
- Wing Choke/Strangle
- Sliding Collar Choke/Strangle
Note that both a choke or a strangle are effective… however one is non compliant as Coach Keith MacGillivray has brought up in the past. Most chokes are applied to the trachea which will restrict airflow, can be painful, and most people will fight back. Strangles restrict blood flow to the brain by applying pressure to the carotid arteries in the neck, lets just say, you don’t get much fighting back except for the foam and your partner seeing stars, then out cold lol.
Rolling: (5 min rounds, 45 sec break)
- Big Red
- New white belt Travis
- New white belt Travis
Maybe we’ll see some of you out this week!
Ossu!
Sat BJJ
Small class yesterday for 2 pm BJJ… must be the sunny 15c weather outside lol. Mike Maronese ran the show… started with a nice fighter fit style warm up with only 2 sets of 3 minutes with an obstacle course of side to side z-running, lunges, hops, then push up side-walks.
Definitely got the blood flowing, Hassan got in late lol… wished me had more rounds, was just getting warmed up. 😛
Big up to Jayden Dekker, Hassan Hashmi, and TBT Steve for showing up though… we reviewed some bombass stuff we went through last week and some.
Reviewed a closed guard hip bump sweep, with your partners hand on your belly. Fake one side, work the other, to a mount x-collar choke… nice of Coach Keith MacGillivray to add some pointers on actually focusing with slapping the mat with elbow contact during the shaving portion to add discomfort and a tighter finish. Worked on the closed guard hip bump sweep to a mount, then armbar while your partner pushes off. Worked on a variation of an inverted arm bar while mounted, then a cool gogoplata… yes real cute lol, then we rolled.
Rolling: (5 min rounds, 45 sec break)
- Jayden Dekker
- Hassan Hashmi
- TBT Steve
- Mike Moronese
lol… quick clip of Mike and TBT Steve Rolling below…

Friday Openmat
Got to the gym around 4:15 pm with Nathan, started lifting by 4:30 pm. Some boys training nogi!!
Word…. Jesse Veltri, Morgan Frazer, Hassan Hashmi, Trina, Big Rig, were OTM. Matt Veal was just finishing up some lifting, before rolling… Travis, & Alex arrived while I started the squats, then Big Willy arrived while I started the bench press.
Looked like Jesse hurt his shoulder while rolling… shity. Work so hard only to get battered and dinged up during an openmat session.
Rest up and get better buddy. It’s not always a fight, especially if you want to keep rolling for life.

Justin Sillman showed up while I hit up my last rowing session in. Rolled 4 rounds at 5 mins a piece. Damn I was beat. Hopefully this lifting takes me to the next old man level lol. Funny thing though, at roughly 6:45 pm while packing up, the French man showed up. At least Justin and Alex decided to stay and roll while we left the building.
I know this ain’t nothing compared to crossfit, but hey, gotta start somewhere lol… maybe you should try BJJ.
Lifting: (4:15 pm to 5:15 pm, 5 sets, 12 reps )
- Squats, 135 lbs
- Bench Press, 135 lbs
- Bent over Barbell Rows, 115 lbs
Then some crunches to work on my vainness, 4 sets of 100 Reps
Conditioning: (Stationary Rowing, Level 5)
- 1000 m, 5 min
- 1000 m, 4:45 min
- 1000 m, 4:45 min
Rolling: (5 mins Round, 1 min break )
- Nathan the Shat Hatton, 2 rounds
- Justin the Beast Sillman, 2 rounds
Tough rounds with these boys… awesome job. Thanks homies.
Hopefully see you guys out for Saturdays BJJ… or Sundays BJJ. Note that Micheal Maronese will be running the show Saturday & the warm up will be… running on glass lol.

Tues 8pm BJJ
Not everyone was built or can naturally lead, let alone coach and teach others. Mistakes happen and heck you may feel like a failure at times. That’s BJJ for you in a nut shell. Fail, fail, fail, and you will eventually learn. Nothing wrong with putting yourself in an uncomfortable position, thats how you learn and grow, especially as a Martial Artist and a human being.
Nice though… a few non regular white belts for a Tuesday night class. Jayden looks miserable above here lol…
With the baby, addition of 5 pm Nogi on Tuesdays/Thursdays, and potential ending of Tuesday night BJJ, I decided to pass on the opportunity to someone else to take the reign and gain some experience in running a late Tuesday night class. My boy Big Rig decided he would jump on it, I hope it helps with his BJJ journey as much as mine… Oss! Brother.
Joke’s lol
Lets just say 8 pm BJJ is cool… when you can get at least 6 hours sleep. Class finishing at roughly 10 pm, walk the dog, shower, quick snack, hang out with the family, by 11 pm everyone is asleep except me, adrenaline still pumping lol. By 1 am finally, its sleep time. At roughly 2 am, the little guy is ussually hungry, and at 4 am lol. I’m up at 5:45 am to feed, walk the dog, my other morning duties, make lunch, kiss the guys goodbye, then out the door to the office by 6:15 am. Routinely, hardly 6 hours lol. Something had to give. Well opportunity knocked with the additional classes. Perfecto Nogi now available on Tuesdays and Thursdays soon, awesomeness… more sleep yay!
Jayden above being the serious guy lol…
I will however continue to coach the early Sundays BJJ classes.
That being said… my new BJJ training regiment will be:
1. Sundays 10 am, GI & Lifting
2. Tuesdays 5 pm, Nogi-pending on work schedule & recovery
3. Wednesdays 6:30 pm, GI-pending on work schedule & recovery
4. Fridays 5 pm, Openmat & Lifting
5. Saturdays 2 pm, GI
It was pretty cool last night watching others run it… Nathan ran a quick warm-up, then Big Rig whipped through a few half guard techniques… then they ran through some positional stuff afterwards… I left at 9 pm cause of fatigue, my patellar tendon was sore, plus I wanted to hang out with my kid… I ended up leaving work at 3 pm yesterday cause we had to take the baby to the clinic. Turns out his mild skin condition may have intensified due to his night scratching… more details once the dermatologist reviews its fully… poor little guy.
Today’s class was decent, Coach has been doing rundowns on self-defense and other applications of BJJ while getting hit and realife situational and relevant issues while being attacked. Self preservation of BJJ of its original intent is important, at least with the sport aspects we have a perfect competitive platform to test ourselves without incurring too much damage to our bodies like MMA or other combative sports. Getting hit in the head sucks lol… Truth. I will discuss more of todays class in tomorrow’s bloggerish.
Hope to see people out for Friday Openmat. There appears to be numerous guys with knee injuries. Crazy, crazy… take care of that shit homies.

Easter Sunday BJJ
Yep the patellar tendon is still sore… limping like a pimp villain. However it is much better then yesterday… tensor bandage for sure and heck even got some lifting in… felt great once I was warmed up! I know the the lifting ain’t much, but I don’t give a freck. There will be gains, slowly and surely. Haven’t worked on any weights consistently since we found out the wife was pregnant… May 28th 2014?? the last official logged date was Dec 16th 2014 lol…. wow. Crazy, sleep deprived for sure lol… since May. Unfortunately the wife had preeclampsia and hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) which is extreme involuntary vomiting. It occurred variably throughout the nights… and yes every night sometimes 4 or 5. All I did was wash sheets lol. let just say the only consistent thing was BJJ, and goin on 4 hours sleep on average a night. Something had to give… the lifting unfortunately. Irony was before all that I hadn’t lifted like since 2008… mainly due to the shoulder problem predominate… when I first decided to start BJJ… lol
Essentially only 3 guys OTM this morning… Rupert Klein, myself, & Scott Hall. Glad they showed up lol. Boom! Easter Sunday and still we got some training in…
Lifting: (9:15 am to 9:45 am, 30 min )
Essentially 4 sets, with 12 reps for each
- Squats, 135 lbs
- Bench Press, 2 sets at 155 lbs, & 2 sets at 135 lbs
- Bent over Barbell Rows, 115 lbs
- Some Crunches to work on my vainness, 4 sets of 50 Reps
BJJ Warm-up:
Pretty standard stuff… got a quick clip below…
Technique Review:
Worked on posture inside someones close guard, as well as a wing strangle… got the quick clips below…
Positional Sparring: (With Full Resistance)
Unfortunately, I forgot to click the fast recording… so it turnout to be 23 mins long… way too much to edit for the sake of this blog and up load onto Youtube at a mega size of 3 gigs… yes 3 gigs…lol
Just take my word for it we went hard lol. 1 min jumping from one guy to another as a warm up. then a 3 min session. There was only a total of 3 guys. Common lol…
Easter sunday! hah
Rolling: (5 min rounds, 45 sec break)
- Scott Hall
- Rupert Klein
Some quick clips of us rolling below…
Not much rolling this morning… but logged in Fri, Sat, then Sun for BJJ… oh and some lifting… boom-diggity-datta lol.
Clean up:
As you can see we did manage to sweep and disinfect the mat before we left… I feel like only the BJJ nerds clean the mats… dafuck lol.

Our GI’s don’t mop them enough I guess?
Rupert Klein is the bomb… Haagen Daz brother!

Hope to see you nerds sometime this week!!
PS… Scotty, a nice clip below for further reference!
