Quick clip of us flowing hard below lol…

10 min stretching

Fun fun… sore…lol will blog about this mornings BJJ later

sore meme

Oss!!

Went for PHO after lol…

Wed BJJ

Long day yesterday lol… ever try to balance a baby and audit paper work regarding Change Orders? lets just say takes patients and time lol… yep had the little guy at the office today… his mom had to spend the day working on some research publication.  Got to the gym round 6:15 pm… a few boys OTM for the Openmat… not the usual though… everyone must be sore, or wait… gone on vacation, summer is around the corner… lol.

wpid-fb_img_1424065906184.jpg

Matt Veal ran the class tonight… got everyone to work on the single leg takedown first. He showed the arm drag and lapel grip break to the single, head inside forehead forward push to an outside head switch with the outside leg stepback. Drilled these a few times with Marios Roussos… bomb. Great warm-up, I guess lol. Impact definitely gets the blood flowing hah!

I’ve attached a video reference found on Youtube below…

Technique:

1. Closed guard, cross sleeve grip break, under the shoulder to over hook,  block the opposite arm with the free hand, an inside cross lapel grip, working for an arm-lock with foot on hip, then on the shoulders, knees together for the submission.
2. Closed guard, cross sleeve grip break, under the shoulder to over hook,  block the opposite arm with the free hand, an inside cross lapel grip, working for an arm-lock with foot on hip, then on the shoulders, knees together for the submission. This time your opponent counters by bending the elbow, then you swing the leg over, to sit up and finish the omaplata.
3. Closed guard,  opposite cross sleeve grip break, to the opposite shoulder, free hand grips the lapel by the trachea and take the back.

I’ve attached a few video references found on Youtube that set up similar overhook arm-lock and omplata:

With a closed guard, cross-grip break, to a over hook arm-lock…

With an overhook arm-lock, to the omplata…

Rolling: (3 min,  30 sec break)

1. Marios Roussos
2. Eric Richardson
3. Big Willy Tenhave

Marios has definitely improved… still spazzy at times, but more controlled. Guard retention surprised me a little,  but it shouldn’t have lol,  as he has been getting privates with Keith.

Eric used to train with us regularly on Tuesdays, but he has been more focused in his boxing, nice to see him out last night. He is definitely one of the tougher newer white belts out there… strong like ox, big like bull lol

Big Willy… what can I say, 240lbs blue belt, over 6 ft tall. Lets just say he is one hell of a mofos to takedown. His strangle defense has improved substantially, always a fun roll trying to get to the top, especially when he gets his hands on you.

Fast hard 3 min rounds, push you. Our boys are getting harder and harder to submit… either I’m getting crappier or they are really improving. I’ll consider the latter lol. Iron sharpens iron. I don’t consider myself a Master, but very far from it, I’m only a spoke in the wheel and are willing to learn and take from everyone, even white belts lol. Everyone always has something to offer, just have to separate the good from the bad… but i will do what i can to help our team improve.

wpid-fb_img_1424065246623.jpg

Cute conversation I had with the wife today while having lunch after BJJ…

Me: You know I started BJJ cause of you… its a great way to relieve stress and get over our arguments… BJJ is the best thing that’s happened for us, without it we may have been divorced or still together by now…

Wife: Yah… maybe at the beginning lol… now your just a BJJ addict…

Me: Hah… better that then drugs, alcohol, or video games…

Then we both chuckled…

image

My boy Travis was bored… photos from Saturday 2pm BJJ lol… enjoy.

Osss!

Sat BJJ

image

Morgan was in to run the class yesterday… happy with my performance.  Other then waking up this morning and my right knee feeling off weird… will blog about this mornings BJJ shortly…

image

Yeah my knee… blah!!!!

Told Morgy to run a harder warm-up.  24 mins long lol… not overly hard actually, but harder then normal hahahah.

Below is a quick clip of our super easy warm-up…

Technique: (4 min per rounds, 2 rounds each)
1. Pendulum sweep with a over the shoulder belt grip.
2. Hook of doom sweep, with an arm entrapment, after your partners defends the pendulum sweep with a step.

Quick clip below…

Rolling: (5 min Rounds, 5 rounds each)
1. Scotty too hotty
2. Travis Duncan
3. New guy, nogi white belt Patrick, hope he returns… went pretty hard for a guy with no experience in a GI. Guess his nogi kicked in once being stangled a few times. A lot a strength,  crushing, and inappropriate use of strength,  typical I guess. He tried to escape an armbar by turning me over literally… being 6 ft 4, throwing me around was simple.
4. Morgan Razer Frazer
5. Nathan Shat Professor Hatton

Some really tough and fun rounds…

A few quick clips of us rolling below…

Scotty Too Hotty

Travis Duncan, then New Guy Patrick

Nathan Shat Professor Hatton, then Morgan Razer Frazer

image

That wasn’t a reference to anyone lol…

image

Talked to our head coach Professor Richer after class… Sundays will be moved to 11 am for obvious selfish reasons lol… more time for me to work on my strength and conditioning lol. Too bad you didn’t come in morning…

Continued GI strangles. I will blog later lol…

Oss!

Wed BJJ

Hah… got to the 6:30 pm class a little early lol… rolled with a little kid… the way he moves, if he continues with it, he will be a beast… plus he was my height hahaha…image

I actually don’t mind self-defense at all. It’s where BJJ began… the roots. Jiu Jitsu was fun last night… Big Tony ran a small warm-up.  Pretty short and standard. Loved the one drill with the backwards walking and shoulder throw with the sleeve and lapel grip… I will steal this for my Sundays warm-up drilling lol.

image

Coach went through a few self-defense techniques with front grip breaks when someone grabs both your wrist with a break to an under hook/shoulder bringing your opponent to the ground, using your free hand to direct the head and set up a Muay Thai style knee to the head. Then there was a sweep with while getting your back taken, as well as ground stuff to negate getting punched in the face with a variation of up-kicking & shrimping. Thought it was funny though… 2 similar body types lol… short stubby legs, arms, big shoulder, barrels for chest and both husky. Me being smaller of the 2 lol… yes hilarious.

image

After the self-defense,  Coach had us work on 2 kinds of arm-bar swings, with no sleeve grips. 2 sets, 1 min each, swinging and alternating sides. First, was the standard arm-bar swings using the inside of your leg to push you to the other side. The second,  I call the lazy man arm-bar with placement of your foot onto your partners hip, while with the other leg moving it upward using your inside thigh to redirect while inside their armpit, and pivoting your body towards that leg. Lets just say lazy once you get a hang of it. Doing this drill slowly and technical really works on the inside of your thighs lol.

image

Technique:
1. Closed guard retention, with control using your legs and elbow popping or pop and chops.

2. Closed guard, with a sit-up bait sweep to break a grip posture, reach over to grab the belt, trap the arm on one side to prevent the post and sweep to that side. Genius lol shear genius hah, word…

3. Closed guard, like above… then if your opponent gets there arm free to post, set up “the London Guard” or “the Williams Guard” on the already free arm, for control then attack for the oma-plata, back-take, shoulder lock or even inverted arm bar.

Below is a nice link for further reference on the London guard…

http://forums.sherdog.com/forums/f12/williams-guard-compendium-gif-image-heavy-long-post-2650585/

Eddie Bravo discusses a reason why he removed it from his system… with your own arms being caught while someone disengages while cartwheeling to the other side to escape, which is a good argument.

Below is a video link for further reference…

That being said, to me it’s more of a transitional guard. Not saying I’m a Black Belt or anything but hey, like with everything in BJJ there is always a lock and a key, nothing is ever a sure thing in BJJ… being adverse to all of it would be idea given the circumstances.

wpid-fb_img_1425488219642.jpg

Hope to see you out at open mat Fri! can’t wait to get some lifting, rowing, and rolling in tomorrow… this week has been a bruiser mentally. Work I’ve been biting my tongue and trying my best to be professional, also the Contractor want to start up ASAP to get out and elsewhere on my project… yes gonna get busy for the little while… oh and the little guy is going through a growth spurt, nuff said, lol baby brain…

Ossu,

Sun Morn Jiu Jitz

Got to the gym at roughly 9:00 am, got some lifting, a short vanity workout and some rowing in boom, trying to get ready for this competition!

Lifting: (9:05 am to 9:40 pm, 4 sets, 12 reps )

  1. Squats, 135 lbs
  2. Bench Press, 135 lbs

Then some crunches to work on my vainness, 4 sets of 100 Reps

Conditioning: (Stationary Rowing, Level 6)

  1. 1000 m, 4:30 min
  2. 1000 m, 4:45 min
  3. 1000 m, 5:00 min

Kind of not impressed with the increase in time, but hey… I moved it up to level 6 lol… next is level 7.

wpid-img_281339041844654.jpeg

Again beautiful day out, 16c to 18c , sunny… great forecast of the size of our class with Myself, The Frenchman, Big Red, new white belt Travis and Professor Shat. The Frenchman had to take off earlier due to other commitments.

Got a quick clip of one of our standard warm up we do below from Sunday…

Quick clips of us working some takedown drills from this morning…

3:00 mins each, alternate once you reach the end of the mat…

2 mins each, alternating…

Technique: (10 mins on each)

  1. Wing Choke/Strangle
  2. Sliding Collar Choke/Strangle

wpid-img_529925733954226.jpeg

Note that both a choke or a strangle are effective… however one is non compliant as Coach Keith MacGillivray has brought up in the past.  Most chokes are applied to the trachea which will restrict airflow, can be painful, and most people will fight back. Strangles restrict blood flow to the brain by applying pressure to the carotid arteries in the neck, lets just say, you don’t get much fighting back except for the foam and your partner seeing stars, then out cold lol.

wpid-fb_img_1424065246623.jpg

Rolling: (5 min rounds, 45 sec break)

  1. Big Red
  2. New white belt Travis
  3. New white belt Travis

Maybe we’ll see some of you out this week!

Ossu!

Sat BJJ

Small class yesterday for 2 pm BJJ… must be the sunny 15c weather outside lol. Mike Maronese ran the show… started with a nice fighter fit style warm up with only 2 sets of 3 minutes with an obstacle course of side to side z-running, lunges, hops, then push up side-walks.
image

Definitely got the blood flowing, Hassan got in late lol… wished me had more rounds, was just getting warmed up. 😛

Big up to Jayden Dekker, Hassan Hashmi, and TBT Steve for showing up though… we reviewed some bombass stuff we went through last week and some.
image

wpid-fb_img_1425816288802.jpg

Reviewed a closed guard hip bump sweep, with your partners hand on your belly. Fake one side, work the other, to a mount x-collar choke… nice of Coach Keith MacGillivray to add some pointers on actually focusing with slapping the mat with elbow contact during the shaving portion to add discomfort and a tighter finish. Worked on the closed guard hip bump sweep to a mount, then armbar while your partner pushes off. Worked on a variation of an inverted arm bar while mounted, then a cool gogoplata… yes real cute lol, then we rolled.

wpid-fb_img_1426097784894.jpg

Rolling: (5 min rounds, 45 sec break)

  1. Jayden Dekker
  2. Hassan Hashmi
  3. TBT Steve
  4. Mike Moronese

lol… quick clip of Mike and TBT Steve Rolling below…

Oss!

Tues 8pm BJJ

Not everyone was built or can naturally lead, let alone coach and teach others. Mistakes happen and heck you may feel like a failure at times. That’s BJJ for you in a nut shell. Fail, fail, fail, and you will eventually learn. Nothing wrong with putting yourself in an uncomfortable position, thats how you learn and grow, especially as a Martial Artist and a human being.

image

Nice though… a few non regular white belts for a Tuesday night class. Jayden looks miserable above here lol…

image

With the baby, addition of 5 pm Nogi on Tuesdays/Thursdays, and potential ending of Tuesday night BJJ, I decided to pass on the opportunity to someone else to take the reign and gain some experience in running a late Tuesday night class. My boy Big Rig decided he would jump on it, I hope it helps with his BJJ journey as much as mine… Oss! Brother.

image

Joke’s lol

Lets just say 8 pm BJJ is cool… when you can get at least 6 hours sleep. Class finishing at roughly 10 pm, walk the dog, shower, quick snack, hang out with the family, by 11 pm everyone is asleep except me, adrenaline still pumping lol. By 1 am finally, its sleep time. At roughly 2 am, the little guy is ussually hungry, and at 4 am lol. I’m up at 5:45 am to feed, walk the dog, my other morning duties, make lunch, kiss the guys goodbye, then out the door to the office by 6:15 am. Routinely, hardly 6 hours lol. Something had to give. Well opportunity knocked with the additional classes. Perfecto Nogi now available on Tuesdays and Thursdays soon, awesomeness… more sleep yay!

image

Jayden above being the serious guy lol…

I will however continue to coach the early Sundays BJJ classes.

image

That being said… my new BJJ training regiment will be:
1. Sundays 10 am, GI & Lifting
2. Tuesdays 5 pm, Nogi-pending on work schedule & recovery
3. Wednesdays 6:30 pm, GI-pending on work schedule & recovery
4. Fridays 5 pm, Openmat & Lifting
5. Saturdays 2 pm, GI

image

It was pretty cool last night watching others run it… Nathan ran a quick warm-up, then Big Rig whipped through a few half guard techniques… then they ran through some positional stuff afterwards… I left at 9 pm cause of fatigue, my patellar tendon was sore, plus I wanted to hang out with my kid… I ended up leaving work at 3 pm yesterday cause we had to take the baby to the clinic. Turns out his mild skin condition may have intensified due to his night scratching… more details once the dermatologist reviews its fully… poor little guy.

image

Today’s class was decent, Coach has been doing rundowns on self-defense and other applications of BJJ while getting hit and realife situational and relevant issues while being attacked. Self preservation of BJJ of its original intent is important, at least with the sport aspects we have a perfect competitive platform to test ourselves without incurring too much damage to our bodies like MMA or other combative sports. Getting hit in the head sucks lol… Truth. I will discuss more of todays class in tomorrow’s bloggerish.

image

Hope to see people out for Friday Openmat. There appears to be numerous guys with knee injuries. Crazy, crazy… take care of that shit homies.
